US Justice Department reviews millions of Epstein records

(MENAFN) The US Justice Department announced on Monday that it has made public only a small fraction of documents connected to the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, while over two million additional records remain under review for potential release.

"To date, the Department has now posted to the DOJ Epstein Library webpage approximately 12,285 documents (comprising approximately 125,575 pages) in response to the (Epstein Files Transparency) Act, and there are more than 2 million documents potentially responsive to the Act that are in various phases of review," the department said in a five-page letter filed with a federal judge.

The review effort involves more than 400 lawyers, including over 125 in the Southern District of New York, dozens from other US attorney offices and Justice Department divisions, and more than 100 FBI document specialists.

Last month, the department said it plans to release the materials "as soon as possible" under the Epstein Files Transparency Act, signed into law on Nov. 19, along with existing federal statutes and court mandates. The department emphasized that protecting victim privacy remains a top priority, even as it seeks to release records “as promptly as practicable.”

The letter, signed by the Attorney General, Deputy Attorney General, and the US attorney for the Southern District of New York, also noted the government is available to answer any questions during the ongoing review.

Epstein died in a New York City jail cell in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges. He had previously pleaded guilty in Florida in 2008 to procuring a minor for prostitution, a conviction widely criticized as a “sweetheart deal.” Victims allege Epstein ran a large sex trafficking network involving prominent figures.

The case continues to attract political and public attention, with lawmakers and advocacy groups calling for transparency about Epstein’s associates and those who may have aided him.

Former US President Donald Trump has repeatedly denied any involvement in Epstein’s activities, though their past social and business connections, alongside Epstein’s ties to elites in politics, business, and academia, have intensified calls for the full release of records.
